Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Saw it this Sunday - everything is spoilers under the cut. Also, thank you to everybody in the usual fannish/Internet spaces I hang out in - I managed to go in pretty much entirely unspoiled. Courtesy is not dead!

For anyone who has not watched yet - there is no extra post-credits scene. (Dude next to us: "There's no extra scene! I've seen this movie three times!)

So my main thought is that I really liked it as a movie, but as a continuation of Star Wars, it's disappointing. Really disappointing :(

The acting! The dialogue! Honestly, I think one of the big problems with especially the prequels (which I do love) is that none of the actors have time to actually act. They're too busy spitting out awful dialogue that no one in real life would ever say, or that gets jammed into the wrong place. They have to say all these stupid lines that are completely unnecessary. In TFA the actors actually have time to be wordlessly communicate. There's no cringey dialogue that feels the need to narrate everything or a ton of terrible one-liners that stick out. It's a huge relief.

I also really liked all the space battles. Really cool and well-shot. Also, the call back initially when the movie opens, of the ship moving forward blotting out the planet - I think that was perfectly balanced. Not an exact recreation of the opening sequence of ANH, new enough that it was different, but a great call-back. I love that when Rey was piloting the Millennium Falcon for the first time and trying to dodge, the ship went all over the place - she's good but not perfect, you know? It's sort of annoying to have characters step in and immediately know how to do everything...plus I think it made the escape a lot more exciting.

The characters! I really like the new crop of characters, though I thought Poe was quite dead. (Well, I guess not.) I like Rey and Finn a lot; both of them have interesting back stories which I think will get expanded on later, which I'm looking forward too. And I think their histories make sense for what they decide to do. It fits really well! (Though man. Rey looks wayyy more like the daughter than Kylo Ren).

The complete retread of ANH. This was just way, way too on the nose. Why are we redoing the same movie? Like, I'm sure if you liked the original trilogy you will like this movie, but I'm not here to watch movies that are the exact same thing as their predecessors. I do like the prequels, and I like that they introduce a ton of new worlds and do a huge amount of worldbuilding. This movie...Tatooine gets replaced by another desert planet. Again there is the old mentor that dies. There is another Mos Eisley cantina. Another one where someone sticks the message into a droid. And most disappointingly, how did the Republic sink so quickly back into another empire? (Another Nazi-inspired one, too, which is annoying. Can't we do something new?) Somehow we have moved three movies back to exactly the same thing we had in ANH - there's an oppressive regime and we need a resistance! It was just so disappointing.

It's like reading the fic that retells the story slightly differently. It's not very satisfying. Yes, the writing is good - but the core of the story is pretty much the exact same thing.

Couldn't take Kylo Ren seriously. In fact, the general Hux was a lot more scary. Especially once he took the helmet off (to be honest, the helmet thing was also pretty derivative, but he idolizes Darth Vader so there's an explanation at least). He looked way too young to be menacing.

Also, lightsabre with a cross-guard of lasers? Nooo how does he not singe his hand?

I admit my opinion may have been affected by the fact that - I don't know if it was the cinematography or the IMAX 3D - but I was so dizzy by about the three-quarters mark I had to close my eyes. I didn't watch some of the starfighter battles (which is too bad, but those had the worst dizzying circular motions, arggggh). We didn't mean to watch that showing, but the standard screening was already sold out when we arrived.

Rey scavenging in the huge deserted thing was amazing. I love that they added that. It isn't surprising that there are these big wrecks - and that in a thinly populated, desert planet, that they would still have stuff to scavenge (not that the best stuff isn't taken - it looks like she's not getting much for them.)

HAN SOLO ;________;

It was fantastic to see Luke again! Ahhhh I really want to know everything about what happened with Leia and Han's son, what's happened to Luke, etc. Also I appreciate that they did not infodump the information on us immediately.

I love that whoever did fight choreography took into account Rey's spear fighting style. It's reflected in her lightsaber fighting!

The part where Rey hugs Leia was probably the most moving part for me - I actually started crying a little bit at that. And not a word of dialogue was spoken. LET ACTORS ACT, omg. But it was really well done. All the sadness ;__;

Yay, I'm so glad you liked it! I never thought of the actors in the prequels not getting enough time to act between difficult spiels of dialogue, but you've got a great point. I'm going to be watching for that from now on. And yay, I'm glad you still like the prequels, too. I keep hearing of/meeting people that are Originals Only, and it's saddening.

Hee, another person on Team Kylo Isn't Scary. Have you seen the parody twitter account Emo Kylo Ren? It's really funny. :)

And oh, yes, Rey and Leia hugging was the best. Can't wait for more cast interacts in the next movie, can you?

I did like it and not like it. I'm all conflicted :(

Hee oh dear, if you watch for that you'll it will be forever unseeable! I was watching the prequels with my brother once and he kept saying "one liner" after each one, and even when he stopped there was this little voice that would pipe up to note it >.<

He took off his mask and I was like...oh. oh dear. I am looking forward to seeing more characterization and depth to all the characters in the next movies; I feel like the new characters are still a little thin!

That twitter is solid gold, omg

YES. ;__;

Oh, sorry, now I feel I didn't pay enough attention to your critiques. But it's definitely better than completely disliking it.

Ha ha, that's hilarious, though I can bet it was really annoying to have a running sibling commentary at the time.

Aw, that's all right! I definitely liked it as a movie, I was just disappointed in its addition to the SW universe; I feel like there just wasn't a lot there that was new, if that makes sense.

Haha I know right? Brothers >:(

I had the exact same thoughts about Kylo Ren! I've been surprised by how popular he seems to be (not that people like him, exactly, but they seem to be engaged by him as a villain), when to me he was such a non-entity that I can't imagine making the effort to even think about him.

Right? Though this may just be a difference between me and fandom at large...I think Darth Maul is visually really cool but as far as investment in him I have 0 interest. I think there just wasn't enough about him beyond generic evilness - also my problem with a lot of Marvel villains. I hope he gets more expansion characterization-wise in the next movie(s); I think all the characters would benefit from that.

I was really sad :( At least it was an enjoyable movie, otherwise.
