On the subject of fools:

So, I was on the bus the other day, and I noticed one of the advertisements.

It was trying to sell music lessons (and note: this is a well-known, big educational institution--they are usually part of "adult upgrading" programs, well-regarded), and it had the logo: "Make something out of nothing" (or something like it). And a blank staff of music.

Now, it looked very innocent. So innocent that I almost missed the fact that there was a key signature--you know, the symbols at the beginning of the staff? And it was one, single G#.

Aaaargh!

If you don't study music, it probably doesn't mean anything. For someone who's played piano for over a decade, though, it made me want to explode. You never, ever, ever start a key signature off with G. For flats or for sharps. NEVER. A key signature for sharps, in Western music, will always start with F#. If there's a G# present, it comes after the F#. This knowledge is what is tested on Preliminary Rudiments. For grade 6 piano. Needless to say, I was not impressed.

What is awful about this is it's a program that's trying to teach you about music. I'm now hoping that the reason is that whoever the designer of the ad is, has never taken music. There goes most of my respect for that institution.
